Apple's First Foldable iPhone May Cost Up to $2,500: Design, Features, and Release Timeline
Apple’s highly anticipated first-generation foldable iPhone is gaining attention as analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shares new insights into its design, features, and expected launch timeline. Here’s what we’ve learned so far:
Design and Features -
According to Kuo, Apple’s foldable iPhone will feature a book-style design with a seamless 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen. When folded, the device will measure between 9–9.5mm in thickness, reducing to 4.5–4.8mm when unfolded.
The hinge mechanism is expected to incorporate a blend of stainless steel and titanium alloy, while the casing will be crafted from titanium alloy to ensure both durability and elegance. Camera-wise, the device will include a dual-lens rear system and a front-facing camera usable in both folded and unfolded modes.
Unlike recent iPhones, the foldable model may forgo Face ID due to space constraints, instead opting for Touch ID integrated into the side button. Positioned as a “True AI-driven Phone,” the device is expected to emphasize multimodal capabilities and seamless cross-app functionality. The larger display should enhance multitasking, allowing users to engage in activities like chatting with AI while using navigation apps.
Pricing and Market Strategy -
Apple’s foldable iPhone will enter the high-end market, with a projected price range between $2,000 and $2,500, Kuo notes. Despite the steep cost, strong demand is anticipated from Apple enthusiasts, provided the device meets Apple’s stringent quality standards.
Development and Production Timeline -
Apple aims to finalize the device’s specifications by Q2 2025, with the development phase beginning in Q3 2025. Mass production is expected to commence by Q4 2026, with an initial shipment target of 3–5 million units.
Looking ahead, Apple’s second-generation foldable iPhone—expected in the second half of 2027—could help push total foldable iPhone shipments to 20 million units by the end of that year. However, due to the technical complexities of the first-generation model, early production volumes will remain limited.
