Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon X85 5G Modem-RF with AI Enhancements along with Introduces Snapdragon X82 for Broader Connectivity

    Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has introduced the Qualcomm X85 5G Modem-RF, its latest advancement in modem-to-antenna 5G technology, succeeding last year’s X80 5G. This launch marks Qualcomm’s eighth-generation 5G modem and the fourth generation to integrate artificial intelligence for enhanced connectivity.

    The X85 is designed to boost performance across a variety of connected and AI-driven applications. Qualcomm claims the modem delivers faster data speeds for streaming, downloads, and uploads, along with improved network reliability in congested areas. Additional benefits include extended battery life and enhanced location accuracy.

    With support for 5G Advanced features, the X85 is primarily targeted at Android smartphones, but Qualcomm also envisions its use in personal computers, fixed wireless access points, automotive applications, and extended reality (XR) devices.

    The modem incorporates a Qualcomm 5G AI Processor with a dedicated tensor accelerator, optimized for 5G and 5G Advanced workloads. Qualcomm states this results in a 30% improvement in AI inference speed compared to the previous generation. The Qualcomm AI-Powered Data Traffic Engine further enhances user experience, enabling AI-driven optimizations such as dynamic gaming traffic prioritization, clearer voice and video calls for OTT applications, and seamless Wi-Fi-to-cellular transitions.

    To support the commercial deployment of X85 capabilities, Qualcomm is collaborating with network operators, infrastructure providers, and standards bodies worldwide.

    Alongside the X85, Qualcomm has introduced the X82 5G Modem-RF, aimed at broader adoption in mobile broadband applications. The X82 offers multi-gigabit download and upload speeds, making it suitable for a wide range of connectivity solutions.

    To facilitate integration across industries, Qualcomm is offering M.2 and LGA reference designs for both the X82 and X85 modems. These designs are intended to help manufacturers incorporate the new modem technology into Customer Premises Equipment (CPEs), mobile broadband (MBB) devices, PCs, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and other applications.

    Availability -

    Both the Qualcomm X85 and X82 modems are currently in the sampling phase with customers. Qualcomm expects devices featuring these technologies to launch commercially in the second half of the year.
