Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 spatial computing platform launched with 4.3K 90fps support, 8x Better AI
Snapdragon has unveiled the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 spatial computing platform, which boasts 4.3K resolution per eye and the capability to accommodate 12 or more concurrent cameras. This ensures the delivery of vivid, immersive mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences.
In comparison to its precursor, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 that powers the Meta Quest 3, the latest iteration exhibits a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% boost in CPU frequency. Additionally, the display resolution has been elevated from 3K to 4.3K per eye, and the platform now supports more than 12 concurrent cameras, up from the previous 10 on the XR2 Gen 2. While maintaining similar features to its predecessor, the new platform brings notable enhancements to performance and visual capabilities.
Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Features -
It boasts support for a per-eye display resolution of up to 4.3K by 4.3K at 90 FPS, ensuring enhanced picture quality characterized by increased depth, richer shades, detailed textures, and vibrant colors. This advanced technology is consolidated into a single-chip architecture, contributing to the development of sleeker and more comfortable headsets.
The platform is equipped with the Qualcomm FastConnect Mobile Connectivity System, featuring ultra-fast Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E, along with Bluetooth 5.3 and 5.2 wireless connectivity. This results in a 60% higher throughput and a 50% lower latency, elevating the overall wireless performance.
Compared to its predecessor, the newer model delivers a 15% higher GPU frequency and a 20% higher CPU max frequency, contributing to improved overall performance. Dynamic foveated rendering, space warp, and game super-resolution further enhance the immersive 4K graphics experience.
The platform supports 12 or more concurrent cameras and includes dedicated XR acceleration blocks, enabling unprecedented interactions such as hand, head, controller, facial expression, depth estimation, and 3D reconstruction. Notably, it achieves 8 times more on-device AI performance than the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1.
Partnership with Samsung and Google -
Qualcomm's latest platform announcement comes with the confirmation of a collaborative effort involving Samsung and Google. Samsung is poised to make its entry into the MR/VR space by introducing a new headset, leveraging Google's Android ecosystem and Qualcomm's chipsets.
In expressing enthusiasm about the partnership, Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of the Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, said, Samsung is excited to join forces with Qualcomm Technologies and Google to once again revolutionize the mobile industry. Leveraging Samsung's mobile expertise and our shared commitment, we aim to deliver an unparalleled XR experience for Galaxy users.
Shahram Izadi, VP of AR at Google, added, We anticipate further collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung in shaping the future of immersive and spatial XR. The capabilities of the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 are eagerly anticipated within the Android ecosystem, enabling the creation of new and exciting experiences.
