SK hynix Develops 16Gb LPDDR6 DRAM on 1c-Node Process with 33% Faster Speeds and Improved Efficiency

    SK hynix LPDDR6 RAM launch.

SK hynix has announced the successful development of its 16-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR6 DRAM built on the company’s sixth-generation 10nm-class (1c) process technology. After first showcasing the product at CES in January, the company has now completed what it claims is the world’s first validation of 1c-based LPDDR6.

SK hynix plans to complete mass production preparations in the first half of the year, with shipments expected to begin in the second half. The new memory is aimed at strengthening its conventional DRAM portfolio tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

    Technical Improvements and Specifications -

The 1c LPDDR6 is primarily targeted at mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets that support on-device AI processing. To meet the growing demands of AI workloads, the company has focused on boosting performance and improving power efficiency compared with LPDDR5X.

    Key highlights include:

    • Processing Speed - Up to 33% faster than the previous generation, enabled by wider bandwidth and increased data transfer rates.
    • Operating Speed - Base speeds exceeding 10.7 Gbps, higher than the maximum speeds of current available products.
    • Power Efficiency - More than 20% reduction in power consumption compared to earlier generations.

    Advanced Power Management -

Two major technologies support the improved energy efficiency:

    • Sub-Channel Architecture - Allows selective activation of only required data paths, enhancing operational efficiency.
    • Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) - Adjusts voltage and frequency based on usage conditions. For instance, it increases performance during intensive tasks like high-end gaming, while lowering power usage during everyday activities.

Expected User Benefits and Market Strategy -

With these architectural enhancements, SK hynix expects users to benefit from longer battery life and smoother multitasking performance on AI-powered mobile devices.

The company stated that it will align production with global market demand and continue collaborating with partners to deliver next-generation AI memory solutions, aiming to create differentiated value for on-device AI applications.
