Sony PlayStation VR Gets Priced, Cheaper than Expected

Sony today unveiled the pricing and availability of the PlayStation VR at GDC 2016. The VR headset, which makes use of the PS4 and its own processing engine to power it, will be available in October 2016 and has been priced at $399.

But you'd have to buy the Playstation camera ($60) and the Move controllers ($50) separately, bringing your total to $509. Its still cheaper than the Oculus Rift, which needs a very powerful PC to work and even the HTC Vive VR. But yes, here too you need a PS4 to make it work.

Sony PlayStation VR Specifications

Getting into the nitty gritty of the specs, the PlayStation VR comes with a 5..7-inch 1080p OLED display which is distributed as 960x1080p per eye. It allows for an almost 100-degree fov (field of view). There is a six-axis motion sensing system available here which is a mix of a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer.

Coming to connectivity options, you have an HDMI input and headphone jack. The box pack of the PS Vr contains the VR headset, its Processor unit, connection cable, HDMI cable, USB Cable, headphones and an AC power cord + brick to power it up.

Virtual Reality - Content, Games

Coming to content, Sony has said that there will be more than 50 games available by the end of this year. Sony also announced 6 free titles in its Playroom VR set, developed by Japan Studio which will be available to all PlayStation VR owners at launch. Moreover, there are some VR experiences on offer as well including London Heist, VR Luge and more.

Pricing and Availability

The standalone PlayStation VR bundle will be available in Japan, North America, Europe and Asia starting October 2016 with pre-orders going live soon. The suggested retail price is USD 399 which roughly translates to about Rs. 27,000. The European price would be €399, £349 and in Japan you'd have to shell our 44,980 Yen.
