Apple iPhone 17 Series will Feature LTPO OLED Display with 120Hz refresh rate: Report
Numerous original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) incorporate advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels in their smartphones. Presently, Apple exclusively employs this technology in its Pro models, marketing it as ProMotion technology, while its standard iPhone and iPhone Plus models utilize low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology. However, indications suggest that Apple intends to introduce this display technology across all models of the iPhone 17.
As per a report from The Elec, Apple plans to transition entirely to LTPO display technology with the iPhone 17 series, with the possibility of China-based BOE emerging as one of its suppliers should it meet Apple's criteria.
Unlike the prevalent low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) OLED, LTPO display technology consumes less power by mitigating leakage current and supports adaptive refresh rates. While this technology is common in Android flagships, Apple has so far reserved it for its Pro models.
The report also indicates that the iPhone 16 series may lack significant differentiating features from the 15 series, prompting Apple to introduce this advanced display technology to make compelling enhancements to the iPhone 17 series.
Even if BOE fails to meet Apple's expectations for LTPO displays, the supplier might still commence supplying LTPS OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone SE4 and other older iPhone models. Consequently, Apple might have to source LTPO supplies from LG and Samsung. Nonetheless, the expectation remains that Apple will fully transition to LTPO OLED panels by the time of the iPhone 17 series.
