Samsung Galaxy XR headset launched Globally with Android XR Platform, Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 SoC
Samsung has launched its new extended reality (XR) headset, the Samsung Galaxy XR in the global market, developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm Technologies, as previously announced. This marks the first device built on the new Android XR platform, integrating multimodal AI capabilities to deliver highly immersive experiences.
AI Integration -
The Galaxy XR comes with Google’s Gemini AI embedded at the system level, enabling it to act as an intelligent assistant that can understand and respond to users through voice, vision, and hand gestures, while also being aware of their surroundings.
Platform and Ecosystem -
Jointly developed by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm, the Android XR platform is based on OpenXR standards and supports multiple device types, including future AI glasses. Samsung confirms that existing Android apps from the Google Play Store will be compatible with the Galaxy XR, in addition to new XR-specific apps from partners such as Adobe, Mirrorscape, and streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock.
Users will also get reimagined Google apps—including Google Maps, YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Meet—optimized for the XR experience.
Design and Hardware -
Built with comfort in mind, the Galaxy XR features an ergonomically balanced frame and a detachable battery pack, which helps reduce weight on the headset itself. It also includes a removable light shield that blocks ambient light for enhanced immersion.
Under the hood, it’s powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform and equipped with 4K Micro-OLED displays (3,552 × 3,840 resolution) running at a 90Hz refresh rate. The headset incorporates six world-facing tracking cameras, two high-resolution pass-through cameras, and sensors that track head, hand, and eye movements.
The battery offers up to 2.5 hours of video playback or 2 hours of general use, and the headset can also be used while charging for uninterrupted experiences.
Core Experiences -
Samsung showcased a range of key use cases for the Galaxy XR, emphasizing its versatility across productivity, entertainment, and discovery.
Productivity -
Users can set up a virtual workspace featuring multiple resizable app windows, including Chrome and creative tools such as Adobe’s Project Pulsar for 3D video editing. The headset also supports keyboard and mouse pairing or PC connectivity for a more traditional work setup.
Entertainment -
The Galaxy XR can transform into a personal theater, supporting popular streaming platforms and immersive 180° and 360° YouTube content. For gamers, Gemini AI offers real-time coaching to enhance gameplay and performance.
Discovery -
With Google Maps, users can explore destinations through 3D Immersive View, while Google Photos introduces Media Auto Spatialization, automatically converting 2D photos and videos into 3D. Additionally, the Circle to Search feature works in pass-through mode, letting users simply circle a real-world or virtual object with their hand to instantly access more information about it.
